Efficient Alcaraz beats Zverev
The world number 1 Carlos Alcaraz triumphed in the last quarterfinals of the men in three sets against the resurgent German Alexander Zverev (ATP 12). The Spaniard acted calmer in the decisive moments. While Zverev took none of his five break opportunities, the 20-year-old took all four opportunities offered by his competitor, who was six years his senior. In a direct comparison, the Spaniard managed to equalize to 3:3 with the win.
The last two US Open winners, Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev (ATP 3), meet in the semifinals. Defending champion Alcaraz won the last duel between the two in the semifinals of Wimbledon in three sets and is leading 2-1 in a direct duel.
Medvedev braves the heat
Daniil Medvedev is in the semifinals of the US Open for the fourth time in the past five years. The world number 3 from Russia won 6:4, 6:3, 6:4 in a duel with his compatriot and friend Andrej Rublev (ATP) in great heat and high humidity. Rublew, who has been friends with Medvedev and Götti from his daughter since childhood, also lost in his ninth quarterfinal at a Grand Slam tournament.
Medvedev, who won the tournament in New York in 2021, faces a major challenge. Friday will see a replay of this year’s Wimbledon semifinal between top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz and Medvedev in the round of four.
Sabalenka is still sovereign
In the women’s tournament, Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the semifinals without losing a set. The 25-year-old from Belarus, who leads the world rankings for the first time after the tournament, defeated 20-year-old Chinese Zheng Qinwen 6-1, 6-4 in 74 minutes.
With that, the winner of the Australian Open is in the last four of this year’s fourth Grand Slam tournament. In the battle for the final, Sabalenka will face the locals Madison Keys on Thursday. She won 6:1, 6:4 against the Czech Marketa Vondrousova.
