After the Wagner uprising against the Kremlin, Sergei Surovikin (56), known as “General Armageddon”, was swallowed to the face of the earth. Apparently knowing about Prigozhin’s plans, he was initially said to be in custody.
The Kremlin is silent about his personal details; he simply disappeared from the scene. On September 4, the well-known TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak (41) revealed the secret of his fate on Telegram: she posted a photo of the general in civilian clothes, accompanied by a woman.
He lives in an upscale neighborhood
Sobchak wrote: “General Sergei Surovikin is outside. Alive, healthy, at home, with his family, in Moscow. The photo was taken today.”
Investigators from “Bellingcat” and “BBC” immediately set to work verifying the photo – and extracting more information from it. First of all, there had to be clarity: is the photo real? In any case, the “BBC” team found no evidence that it was fake.
The woman next to Surovikin is almost certainly his wife Anna. In addition, the photo had never before been published anywhere on the Internet. Because Surovikin lives in one of Moscow’s posh neighborhoods and appears to be walking across a parking lot in the photo, researchers compared the trees in the photo with images from the surrounding area.
On the terrace of a restaurant
And they found what they were looking for: The location of the photo could finally be determined relatively clearly: it should be the terrace of the restaurant “Terrazza”. The white stripes on the ground, hedge and fence all show almost exactly where Surovikin was photographed.
But although the photo shows that Surovikin seems to be alive, his further fate is unclear. As Bellingcat reports, Moscow Radio asked Kremlin spokesman Peskov if he could ask a question about Soerovikin. The short answer: “No, you can’t.” (neo)
