A British couple is said to have partied in restaurants in Crete and then complained.

First fill your stomach and then refuse to pay. A British couple allegedly used this nasty scam to scam several restaurants on the Greek dream island of Crete. The couple ate it in at least three Greek taverns in Koutoulafari in northern Crete, but complained and left without paying.

Now the couple is commenting on the allegations for the first time – and denying everything. “What we are being accused of is simply not true. It is a small village with a street full of shops, bars and taverns. It would be impossible to leave a restaurant without paying,” Ian M.* told the Daily Mail.

“We have never left a restaurant without paying the bill”

As M. and his girlfriend Angela from Liverpool keep reporting, they just refused to pay the bill at a restaurant.

They were served “poorly prepared” chicken with fries worth twelve euros. “The waitress asked if everything was okay with the food and we said the chicken and chips were undercooked,” he said.

He then explained to the manager that they would not pay for the food. However, when he threatened them with jail time, they bowed to the will of the manager. “As soon as he mentioned the police, I panicked. We didn’t want any trouble with the authorities. That’s why we paid the bill in full.” Even his girlfriend Angela can hardly believe that they are being called thieves. “We’ve never left a restaurant without paying the bill.”

The couple has been traveling to Crete for 35 years

In addition to the allegations, the couple is particularly concerned about the hatred shown to them. It all started when an employee of a restaurant in Crete posted a photo of a couple to a Facebook group. Below that was the warning ‘Keep an eye on this couple! After they finish eating, they refuse to pay.”

Since returning home, Angela M. has received numerous messages from people in Greece saying they are not allowed to come back and are not welcome on the island. A slap in the face to the couple, who have been traveling to Crete for 35 years and love the place: “It’s so unfair because we haven’t done anything wrong.”

The report does not reveal whether the story is just a misunderstanding, or whether the suspected British fraudsters are now making excuses. (dzc)
