Israeli archaeologists have found four ancient Roman swords in a cave in the Dead Sea.
They were believed to have been hidden by Jewish rebels nearly 1,900 years ago during the Bar Kokhba revolt against the Romans, the Israel Antiquities Authority said Wednesday. “This is dramatic evidence of a specific moment in history,” the statement said.
The Jewish revolt under rebel leader Bar Kokhba broke out in 132 and was crushed about three years later.
The researchers discovered the weapons in a small opening in a difficult-to-access cave near the Ein Gedi nature park, according to the information. They were “exceedingly well” preserved. So three of them were in wooden sheaths. “Finding a single sword is rare, but four? This is a dream. We rubbed our eyes to believe it,” the researchers said. Further research must now reveal when exactly the swords were hidden.
The arid climatic conditions of the area made it possible to preserve artifacts. “It is a unique time capsule in which fragments of scrolls, coins from the time of the Jewish revolt, leather sandals and now even swords in their scabbards look as sharp as if they had just been hidden,” said the director of the antiquities authority.
