The number of corona cases will increase again in the autumn. In Switzerland, too, the viral load shows that more people are falling ill. The variant BA.2.86, also called Pirola, has special features. The WHO has already classified it as a ‘variant under observation’.
Pirola was detected in Switzerland at the end of August. There were other cases in South Africa, Israel, the US and Britain. Now Israel has already introduced a corona regulation to prevent the spread.
As TV channel Channel 13 reports, all new patients in internal medicine departments in hospitals in Israel must now undergo a PCR test. Last week, 136 new corona cases were reported – and the trend is rising. The Israeli Ministry of Health is also concerned about the number of serious cures.
Pirola can bypass immunity
Pirola first appeared in Denmark in July. There is little data about the new virus variant. Pirola has more than 30 mutations on the spike protein – which makes the variant dangerous.
In the journal The BMJ, several researchers write that the variant has at least as many mutations as omicron. That is a problem. Because the more mutations, the greater the risk that the immunity built up through previous illnesses and vaccinations can be bypassed.
However, as with the Eris variant, severe cures are not expected as at the beginning of the pandemic. So far, no other country where Pirola has been detected has taken any action. (jwg)
