They want to retake their territory. The locals of the Spanish resort of Benidorm have been battling British beach chair hoarders who are snatching every spot on the beach from under their noses. Now the residents have come up with a trick in the race against the British: while the British partygoers are still sleeping off their intoxication, they put up their parasols. First, “The Mirror” reported on this new tactic.
Photos show laid-back Spaniards strolling the boulevard in the middle of the night, digging their posts into the sand and setting up sun loungers next to them. The result is a row of brightly colored umbrellas that look a bit out of place in the dark – but outsmart the foreign guests.
Night owl trick splits the web
Apparently, the reservation of sun loungers has also gotten out of hand on the Spanish east coast in recent days, as the beach is getting busier. It is believed that a group of elderly gentlemen, all based in Benidorm, are out to outsmart the British and German tourists.
The procedure divides opinion on the internet. Some praise the smart Spaniards, others describe the action as “stupid”. On a social network, a woman wrote: “You should do this everywhere.” One man agreed: “Yes, exactly, the ‘first come, first served’ principle should apply”. But the critical comments are also piling up: “Some people really have nothing else to do. That is ridiculous.”
Tüechli’s madness becomes more and more extreme
Tüechli wars occur again and again in Spanish holiday regions. It wasn’t until June that holidaymakers in Mallorca attracted attention with a new Gaga tactic for reserving sun loungers: they put their towels on the floor before the pool opened.
