Try them on, admire yourself in the mirror – and suddenly your glasses were gone! Bjørnar Moxnes (41), the chairman of the Norwegian Marxist party Rødt, is attracted to Hugo Boss designer sunglasses. That’s why he made them disappear in his pocket in the shop.
However, the theft at Oslo airport came to light. The thief must now answer for this, writes Norwegian broadcaster NRK.
Just forgot to pay?
It happened in mid-June: Moxnes enters a store and leaves with a pair of sunglasses – without paying for them. But the party chairman made the calculation without the surveillance camera. The glasses were later found in his luggage without a price tag.
The glasses are said to have cost him about 100 francs, but he had to pay 260 francs for the theft.
At first, Moxnes claimed he forgot to pay for the sunglasses. Finally, he wanted to admit his mistake: “I made a serious mistake and made the situation worse by how I handled it. I am very sorry,” he wrote on Facebook.
He also doesn’t want his family and friends to continue to suffer from his mistake. Since the incident, they have been attacked in public and on social media. And that, although he alone bears the fault. In addition, he wanted to protect the party: “The party must be able to fully concentrate on politics,” he wrote in his post. That is why he resigned on Monday after eleven years as party chairman.
Until the party congress next year, Marie Sneve Martinussen (37), the previous deputy party leader, will take over the chairmanship. Everything she said about Moxne’s firing: “He admitted to stealing the sunglasses. He should have done that a long time ago, but now he’s taken action and resigned. That’s the end of it for me.” (lia)
