For years, the Obamas spent part of their summers on the high society island of Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. Always at hand: your personal chef Tafari C.* († 45).
He was sous chef at the White House during Barack Obama’s tenure. He even brewed his own beer with honey from Michelle Obama’s garden. Now he died in a tragic accident. His body was recovered by police divers on Monday.
In a statement, the Obamas said: “Tafari was a cherished part of our family. When we met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House – creative and passionate about food and his ability to bring people together. In the years that followed, we came to know him as a warm, funny and exceptionally kind person who made our lives a little brighter.”
“It breaks our hearts that he is gone”
The pair continued, “So as we prepared to leave the White House, we asked Tafari to stay with us, and he generously agreed. He’s been a part of our lives ever since and it breaks our hearts that he’s gone.”
The Obama couple were not in their home at the time of the accident. During the accident, another stand-up paddler saw Tafari C. fall off his board, briefly reappear, but then dove and disappeared.
His body was found a day later after a large-scale search. (new)
