Odessa’s cultural heritage is so devastated that Putin wants to replace Ukrainian grain – the nightly update without photos

The Transfiguration Cathedral in Odessa has been badly damaged again. The reason for this is the ongoing attacks by the Russian army on the port city on the Ukrainian Black Sea coast.

“The destruction is enormous, half of the cathedral now has no roof.”

The cathedral was built in the 19th century. A little later, it was destroyed for the first time on the orders of the Soviet ruler Josef Stalin. It was not until 1999 that the cathedral with its bishop’s church of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church was rebuilt as faithfully as possible.

After heavy shelling, the cathedral is now again heavily damaged. And that despite the fact that the historic old town was placed on the Unesco list of endangered world heritage as a result of the Russian war of aggression. The international organization strongly condemned the Russian attack. Like Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy:

“Rockets against peaceful cities, apartment buildings and a cathedral… There is no excuse for Russian evil.”

The cathedral is not the only cultural site occupied by Russian missiles. According to UNESCO, it employs several museums. The clearing of the rubble has already started. Russia denies attacking cultural sites in Odessa.
