Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is due to appear in court in Malmö, southern Sweden, since Monday at 9:30 am. This is evident from the indictment that has been viewed by the AFP news agency The 20-year-old is accused of not following police instructions at a protest in Malmö last month.
Thunberg had participated in the action of the environmental group Ta tillbaka framtiden (Taking back the future), in which activists tried to block the entrances and exits of Malmö harbour.

With their blockade, the participants wanted to protest against the use of fossil fuels. At the time, Thunberg refused to leave the site of the blockade on instructions from the police.
“We don’t just want to watch, we want to physically stop the fossil fuel infrastructure. We are taking back the future,” Thunberg wrote on Instagram at the time.

Greta Thunberg regularly criticizes governments in harsh terms for not doing enough to combat global warming. For that reason, she has been dragged away by the police or taken into custody for short periods of time several times during protests.
This last happened in March at a demonstration in front of a ministry in Oslo. And also in January, Greta Thunberg was taken away by the German police at the protest against coal mining in Lützerath. The photos of the activist went around the world at the time.
What punishment awaits the climate activist?
Thunberg faces a maximum sentence of up to six months in prison under Swedish criminal law. Prosecutor Charlotte Ottosen, however, told AFP that such offenses are usually punishable by fines.
As a 15-year-old, the young activist began sitting in front of the Swedish parliament in Stockholm during Friday classes to demonstrate for more effective climate protection measures. Their weekly strike expanded into the global Fridays for Future protest movement in just a few months. Thunberg ended her school strikes in June because she graduated.
