Greece: At least one dead in bridge collapse Iran: Attackers kill four policemen

At least one person was killed when a bridge on the ring road around the Greek port of Patras collapsed on Sunday. Eight others were injured and taken to hospitals, a spokesman for the fire service said at a press conference in the evening. Two deaths had previously been reported.

State broadcaster ERT showed videos of rescue teams working on the bridge, which consisted only of concrete rubble. “We are still looking for other people who may be under the rubble,” said a member of the rescue team.

The Greek newspaper “To Proto Thema” reported in the evening that three suspects responsible for the accident had already been arrested. According to this, someone who was responsible for cordoning off the area could be responsible. The details of the arrests were initially not officially confirmed.

According to a report on state television, the bridge had been closed for several days and was about to be demolished because it was unstable. At the time of the accident, there were two heavy equipment on the bridge, including a large crane, as the photos show. Survivors and those under the bridge at the time of the collapse said they were looking for bits of steel and iron to sell. (sda/dpa)
