It is one of the most famous affairs in American political history: in 1995, Monica Lewinsky had an affair with Bill Clinton. She was 22 and an intern at the White House, he was president of the United States – and 27 years her senior. On July 23, 2023, Monica Lewinsky will celebrate her 50th birthday. What is she doing now?
Clinton’s extramarital affair threw him into a serious crisis during his first term and nearly cost him his post. In 1998, Bill Clinton was impeached for trying to cover up the connection. Shortly afterwards he was acquitted.
Bill Clinton saved his image. But Monica Lewinsky is still for many the most famous intern in the world or “the affair.” However, thanks to the #MeToo movement, she now sees the scandal in a different light. She told Vanity Fair in 2018 that there had been “gross abuse of power” by Clinton.
Nevertheless, she insisted that the affair with him was voluntary. But #MeToo made her aware of how big the “massive power imbalance” was between them. “I’m starting to wonder if the idea of consensual consent makes sense in these circumstances.”
“He had a dangerous charm”
In 2021, Lewinsky spoke to People magazine about the Clinton affair: “I was fascinated by him, as were many others.” To which she added. “He had charisma, a dangerous charm, and it was intoxicating. We think we’re on that solid ground in our early twenties. We think we know everything, and yet we’re in this quicksand.”
Almost 30 years have passed since the affair. Lewinsky initially went into hiding and became a target for many Americans. With the help of therapies, her family and friends, she was able to process what she had been through. She is now a producer, contributor to Vanity Fair, anti-bullying activist and speaker.
Appearance on the sidelines of the Oscars
Most recently, she appeared at a public event at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in March. There she posed for the photographers in a white dress with black lace details.
Lewinsky gives her more than 60,000 fans insights on Instagram. There she posted a selfie wearing a striped sweater, sunglasses and straw hat for Independence Day on July 4. Lewinsky also revealed on the social media platform that she celebrated her 50th birthday in Malibu.

She keeps her private life out of the public eye and just keeps sharing pictures of her parents on Instagram. “I feel like if anyone has a right to keep their love life private, it’s me,” she told People.
She explained that the relationships she has are “very valuable” to her, including those that have failed. “I learned a lot.” She’s not married. “I don’t know if that’s going to happen or not, and I’m more okay with that than I used to be,” Lewinsky continued.
