The forest fires on the Greek island of Rhodes continue to rage.

Since people were evacuated from the Greek holiday island of Rhodes due to forest fires, the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) helpline has answered more than 100 questions about the situation on the island. The FDFA announced that among the evacuees were Swiss.

The situation related to the fires on the island is still being closely monitored, the ministry said. The Swiss Embassy in the Greek capital Athens is in contact with the relevant local authorities and provides consular services.

According to the FDFA, an additional consular officer was on his way to Rhodes early Sunday evening to reinforce the honorary consulate on site and support Swiss nationals where necessary. According to the FDFA, Swiss people abroad and tourists are obliged to follow the instructions of the local authorities. The FDFA can be reached via the helpline in Bern and via the consulate in Rhodes itself.

According to the EDA, the airport on the island is operating normally despite the wildfires that have gotten out of hand. On Sunday afternoon, among other things, a flight from the Swiss airline to Rhodes was carried out as planned. Return trips must be organized individually or through a travel agency, the EDA said. Tourists from Switzerland told Blick how they had to flee their hotels before the fires.

Numerous villages and hotels in Rhodes have been evacuated since Saturday because of large uncontrolled forest fires. Thousands of tourists and locals wanted to leave the island because of the fires. (SDA/treasure)
