Flash floods in Afghanistan have killed more than 30 people. At least 31 people have been killed across the country in the past 72 hours, civil protection officials confirmed to the German news agency on Sunday. A total of eight provinces were affected.

Many fatalities have occurred in Maidan Wardak province. There, countless residents were killed in their sleep by bodies of water. Dozens of people are still missing, according to civil protection. Hundreds of homes were damaged or destroyed.

Extreme weather extremes occur again and again in Afghanistan. The country is suffering greatly from the effects of climate change. After decades of war and conflict, a humanitarian catastrophe reigns. For almost two years now, Afghanistan has been ruled by the militant Islamist Taliban.
