The Berlin Lion Search also made international headlines.

Since Thursday, hundreds of emergency services in Berlin have been searching for a lioness they thought had escaped. The large-scale search in Germany also made headlines abroad. After 35 hours, authorities finally announced that the big cat was probably a wild boar.

Numerous international media reported extensively about the large-scale operation in recent days and finally had to report the error to their readers. While joking memes circulate on the Internet, one or the other international newspaper is also surprised by the events in Brandenburg and Berlin. An overview.

France

The French «Libération» wrote: «The inhabitants of Kleinmachnow can bring their dachshunds out again. The lioness, who was searched for 30 hours by more than 300 police officers from Thursday to Friday, is no longer in danger of eating her pet. The animal, filmed on Wednesday night by a resident of this exclusive neighborhood southwest of Berlin, was neither a big cat nor an April Fool’s joke. It was a wild boar, as nature lovers, who unfortunately forgot to ask their opinion, claimed from the start.”

Great Britain

“Our missing lion is actually… a wild boar: the Germans, dejected, stop hunting the beast in Berlin after admitting it is NOT a lioness,” writes Britain’s Daily Mail.

The “BBC” writes in turn: “The trigger for the feverish search was a short, grainy video made by a civilian in the early hours of Thursday morning. (…) Experts also offered advice on how to handle the wild animal if anyone encounters it, such as standing still and avoiding eye contact.”

USA

The media also picked up the case of the alleged lioness in the US. “NBC News” wrote, “A large-scale police operation to search for an escaped lion near Berlin — involving thermal imaging cameras, helicopters, vets and heavily armed hunters — ran into a problem on Friday: There’s no lion at all.”

In contrast, The New York Times wrote: “German authorities have ended the desperate search for a free-roaming lioness that had caused panic in Berlin (…) It was unclear where a lion might have come from, as it is not native to Germany. Although there are zoos, animal sanctuaries and circuses in the area, police said none have reported a missing lioness. (…) Others joked about the chaos, and memes abounded.”

Spain and Italy

While the Spanish “El Pais” only soberly writes: “The lioness was none at all”, the Italian “La Repubblica” reports: “Lion on the run in Berlin: false alarm, it’s just a wild boar.” (SDA/dzc)
