The acceptance of 3D printed meat has increased in recent years. According to a recent study, one fifth of the people in Germany would eat cultured meat from a 3D printer, as the digital association Bitkom recently explained in Berlin. Four years ago that was around 13 percent, in 2021 it will already be around sixth.

Using a food printer, artificial meat is produced, for example from bovine cells. However, this form of meat production is not yet available for the mass market. According to the study, about 57 percent of Germans would ‘absolutely not’ end up on their plate anyway. For 16 percent, the alternative ‘rather not’ is an option.

3D printed meat is better for the climate

Cultured meat minimizes the need for arable land and water, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and thus reduces the overall environmental burden, explains Bitkom advisor Jana Moritz.

24 percent of the respondents also think that meat from the 3D printer can contribute to more sustainable food production. Twelve percent would like to spend more money on it than on conventional meat, eleven percent see food from the 3D printer as a pure luxury product.

In general, more and more people are becoming more aware of their meat consumption. The range of meatless seitan, tofu or peas alternatives for frying and grilling is growing, explains Bitkom. For the current study, the association interviewed about 1,000 people ages 16 and older. According to Bitkom, the research is representative.

Israeli start-up brings products to Germany

A year ago, Watson reported that Israeli start-up Redefine Meat was producing plant-based vegan meat using 3D printers. The company indicated that it wants to expand and also bring vegan plant-based meat to Germany.

Today you can taste the products of the start-up in numerous German restaurants – for example, lamb, kebab and bratwurst. The company writes on its website that the production of beef has a major impact on the environment. “At Redefine Meat, we are proud to be working on real alternatives to change that, making it easier for everyone to enjoy delicious meat – without compromise,” it says.
