Fire in Evin prison in Tehran

Images are circulating on social media suggesting a fire has broken out at the notorious Evin prison in the Iranian capital, Tehran. There are also explosions. These are shots, they say. It’s unclear what exactly is going on.

There has been unrest in Iran for weeks. The riots began after the death of a woman arrested by vice squads last month. Mahsa Amini, 22, is said to have broken the rules requiring a woman to cover her head in public.

Images of demonstrations demanding freedom and the resignation of the government continue to appear daily.

Opponents of the Iranian regime are among those held in Evin prison. Nanzanin Zaghari-Ratcliff was also held here for years before being put on a plane to London in March this year. The British-Iranian woman has been charged with “espionage” and “conspiracy” to overthrow the Iranian government.
