AfD wants to radically transform Europe: against climate protection, homosexuals, abortion and the elites

The AfD has announced a draft program for the 2024 European elections. It exposes numerous enemies of the far-right party.

The delegates of the AfD party congress want to spend a total of six days in Magdeburg in the coming week and the week after to discuss a substantive position. The focus is on establishing a program for the 2024 European elections. The 92-page draft of the program committee amounts to a radical reorganization of European politics. The central points:

With the unintentional demand for the dissolution of the EU, the AfD leadership caused surprise in front of the party congress: “We therefore strive for the orderly dissolution of the EU,” the leading motion said. The party leadership stepped back from this: the demand had ended up in the text due to an “editorial error”. However, due to deadlines, the application could not be changed before the party congress. Now it is up to the deputies in Magdeburg to remove the verdict through a party vote at the request of the AfD leadership.

They want to rebuild the EU

So not a dissolution – but a kind of new foundation of the EU: “We want to create a new European economic and interest community, a federation of European nations,” says the draft program. The AfD expressly rejects the goal of a “European federal state”: “Such a structure has neither a people nor the necessary minimum of cultural identity, which are necessary conditions for successful states.”

The AfD’s argument revolves heavily around terms such as “nation”, “sovereignty” and “identity”. The terms “nation” and “national” alone appear 145 times in the election manifesto. Decisions should not be made in Brussels, but by the nation states. A paradox: in the election program, the AfD calls for the dissolution of the EU parliament – that is, the parliament in which it wants to win mandates again with this election program. The powers of parliament should be transferred to the nation-states until a “reorganization of the situation” is not explained in detail.

Islam is a “danger to Europe”

The preamble to the program already mentions ‘globalist elites’ who have taken control of the EU. It thereby adopts a concept of the enemy common in right-wing circles: “Global elites” who would have conspired against “ordinary citizens”.

The AfD sees another enemy in Islam, which it classifies as a “danger to Europe”. Islam cannot be reconciled with the fundamental European principles of law, freedom and democracy. This is one of the reasons why immigration must be “massively restricted” – including through the “erecting of physical barriers” at the EU’s external borders.

No condemnation of Russia

There is no explicit condemnation of the Russian offensive war in the election manifesto. It only contains the statement: “The Russian invasion of Ukraine caused great suffering to those affected.” The AfD calls for rapprochement with Russia. The economic sanctions must end “immediately”.

The AfD keeps its distance from the US: their interests “are always different from those of Germany”. And further: “Germany and Europe must not be reduced to the followers of a great power.”

Against gay marriage, abortion and climate change

“We support it when people observe traditional gender roles”: In the program, the AfD presents itself as the guardian of traditional family images. She wants to largely limit the right to abortion to “absolute exceptions” – for example for medical reasons or in the case of rape. The AfD rejects same-sex marriage, but also calls for “respect” for “forms of coexistence other than marriage between a man and a woman”.

The AfD rejects measures to combat global warming. “We do not share the irrational CO2 hysteria that is structurally destroying our society, culture and way of life,” the program says. The climate has always changed “since the earth’s existence”. “Current climate changes fit perfectly with these changes.” The AfD evaluates the EU’s requirements for reducing carbon emissions as a “dystopia of an eco-socialist Brussels accountability and redistribution state”.
