The fire service has largely contained the two large forest fires north and west of the Greek capital Athens.
The situation is much better, a spokesperson for the fire service told Skai radio station on Thursday morning. There are still smaller fires, both in the Dervenochoria region and near the town of Loutraki, but it is hoped that they will be extinguished during the day.
In Rhodes, on the other hand, the forest fire is raging in the middle of the holiday island; The situation here is slightly better than the day before, but the impassable terrain with trees up to 15 meters high makes extinguishing work difficult, state broadcaster ERT reports.
The fire brigade estimated the risk of forest fires for Thursday to be generally lower than the previous days, partly because the rather strong wind died down. However, Greece is preparing for another heat wave, which is expected to peak over the weekend. In view of the ongoing severe drought, it was said that it could not be completely clear. (saw/sda/dpa)
