At the beginning of July, an explosion occurred on the oil platform. It is unclear whether it is related to the oil spill.

Several Mexican NGOs have reported an oil spill at a gas platform in the Gulf of Mexico. According to satellite images, the oil slick expanded over the past week over an area of about 400 square kilometers.

The organizations, including Greenpeace, announced this on Tuesday. According to this data, the oil spill began around July 4. The organizations criticized the authorities’ “total lack of transparency”.

Explosion and fire on oil platform

On July 7, there was an explosion and fire at the nearby gas production platform of the state-owned Pemex. Two workers were killed.

Pemex said on Tuesday there had been a leak. However, the amount that escaped was “minimal” and most of the escaped volume was immediately captured. The company rejected information from the non-governmental organizations about the size of the leak. (SDA/AFP)
