Japanese engineers have launched the ‘lemon melon’, a fruit that combines sweetness and acidity.
The product has the shape and appearance of a watermelon, but completely excludes its typical green stripes and also has an unusual white interior.
Although it weighs much less than typical watermelonAt just 3.3-4.4 pounds, HBCNews says the lemon melon sells for ¥3,218, or $23.30.
“If you cut it and cool it well before eating, the balance of acidity and sweetness will come out even more”, explain its creators.
Suntory’s new product is grown on five farms in the city of Furano, an area known for producing melons throughout Japan.
It is not clear how exactly the engineers produced it lemon melon, but in general crop hybrids are often produced by techniques such as cross-pollination.
Specialists have the ability to adjust the characteristics of such a crop, including color quality and resistance to pests.
The Japanese creation comes just one year after white strawberries arrived in European countries.
HBCNews filmed a group of customers trying lemon melon for the first time arrived on the Japanese market.
“It has a good balance between sweet and sour. It would be the perfect fruit for a hot day,” said one consumer.
