An American tourist illegally crossed the border into the communist north on Tuesday while touring the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, according to the United Nations.

According to the Twitter account of the local UN command, the American has been arrested by the North Korean authorities. One is currently negotiating with the North Korean side to clear up the incident, the tweet said.

Several South Korean media reported on Tuesday that it was a US Army soldier. This was initially not officially confirmed.

According to the UN, the American citizen had participated in a tour of the South Korean part of the demilitarized zone that separates the two Korean states. Americans have illegally entered North Korea several times in recent years. There they were usually sentenced to several years in prison and only released after lengthy negotiations.
