Death toll in mine disaster in Turkey rises to 40, one miner is still missing

At least 40 miners died in the mining accident in Turkey last night. Eleven people were injured and taken to the hospital. One miner is still missing, Turkey’s interior minister said this morning.

Last night there was an explosion in a mine near the Turkish coastal town of Amasra. At that time there were 110 people in the mine. Most of the miners managed to escape from the mine, but another part got stuck.

Rescue operations have been ongoing since then. The operations are nearing completion, Turkey’s energy minister said, but are still searching for the last person. 58 miners have since been rescued. Earlier reports put the death toll at 28. Several missing persons have been recovered, bringing that number to 40.

regulations insufficient

It is believed that the explosion in the mine was caused by a build-up of combustible gases. Turkish President Erdogan will visit the disaster site today. He went on Twitter know that the disaster will be investigated and any “negligence” will be punished.

Mining accidents are more common in Turkey, observers say, because of inadequate or non-compliance with regulations. In 2014, about 300 people died in a mining disaster in the Izmir area.
