Border crossing without permission: North Korea arrests US citizens

An American has illegally crossed the border between South and North Korea. He was arrested in North Korea.

An American has crossed the inner Korean border from South to North Korea without permission and has been arrested as a result. As the UN command there announced on Tuesday, the cross-border commuter has now been taken into custody by North Korean authorities.

Several South Korean media reported on Tuesday that it was a US Army soldier. This was initially not officially confirmed.

According to the UN, the American citizen had participated in a tour of the South Korean part of the demilitarized zone that separates the two Korean states. Americans have illegally entered North Korea several times in recent years. There they were usually sentenced to several years in prison and only released after lengthy negotiations. (SDA)
