Prices for airline tickets abroad have risen sharply this year. In the first six months, flights cost an average of 24.9 percent more than in the first half of last year, the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced on Tuesday. In contrast, the price increase for airline tickets for domestic flights in the same period was quite low at 3.9 percent.
Prices for tickets to Asia and Australia in particular rose sharply
According to the statistics bureau, the biggest price increases in economy class were on international long-haul flights to Asia and Australia, where travelers paid about 42.5 percent more than a year ago. But flights to other European countries also rose sharply by 31.9 percent. For flights to South America and Africa, consumers had to pay 19.6 and 16.6 percent more respectively.
Recently, travelers also had to dig deeper into their pockets for package holidays: they cost 10.2 percent more than in the first half of 2022. Within Germany, prices rose more strongly here (14.5 percent) than for package holidays abroad (ten per cent). Total consumer prices in Germany rose by 7.4 percent compared to six months, according to the statistics office. (AFP)
