In recent days there has been little movement on the various front sections in Ukraine. From time to time, Ukrainian and Russian troops seized or recaptured a few hundred meters of territory. Military experts were unable to determine any major attacks from either side.

Now the spokesman for the Ukrainian armed forces in the east of the country, Serhiy Cherevaty, reports that the Russian army is gathering 100,000 troops around the cities of Kupyansk and Lyman. The region is considered an important front section in the east of the country. Kuyansk was liberated during the counter-offensive in September 2022 and the city is considered a strategically important hub.

This is another reason why the concentration of troops on both sides was already high in this part of the front. However, the recent increase in soldiers could well be a sign of a new attempt by the Russians.

More than 900 tanks?

According to Ukrainian media, the generals of Russia’s sole ruler, Vladimir Putin, have moved some of their best units to the region, Cherevaty said. “In addition, the enemy has accumulated more than 900 tanks, more than 550 artillery systems and 370 multiple rocket launchers.”

Ukrainian Defense Minister Hanna Maljar also said that a large concentration of troops on the Russian side was observed in the region around the city of Kharkiv. Fighter planes and attack helicopters were also housed there.

An independent confirmation of this is not yet available.

Should Russia dare to attack this part of the front, the Ukrainians would be forced to defend it with their own large troop formations. This in turn could have consequences for the Ukrainian counter-offensive on other front sections, including in the south of the country.
