A fire broke out at the airport of the Sicilian city of Catania on Sunday evening. Due to the heavy smoke development, the airport had to be evacuated. The fire service was deployed to extinguish the flames. Passengers and airport staff had to evacuate the terminals. Panic broke out and some passengers had inhaled light smoke, Italian media report.
The airport operator reports that the airport will remain closed until Wednesday. Vincenzo Bellini Airport in Catania is the fifth largest airport in Italy and the first in Italy for domestic traffic. The airport is very busy, especially in summer.
