At first, Olaf Scholz is silent, apparently wanting to ignore the climate activist. But then it really gets going. Carla Hinrichs of the “Last Generation” met the Chancellor at the Bundestag on Friday, according to her own statements by accident. The well-known activist approached the chancellor and had a short conversation with him.

A video released by the activists shows Scholz walking down the street accompanied by three bodyguards and two associates. Hinrichs walks next to him and asks him if he can really protect our society. At first she gets no answer.

Hinrichs says that Transport Minister Volker Wissing should actually present a program, but does not. That’s enough for Scholz: “Yes, he does,” he replies. People would always say the wrong thing. In fact, Germany will be CO₂ neutral by 2040. “As the fourth largest economy in the world” this is a big burden.

Chancellor interrupts activist: ‘No, you don’t see it’

Hinrichs begins to answer, “What I see is that…” But Scholz doesn’t let her speak and seems indignant. ‘No, you don’t see it. You can’t see it,’ he interrupts the activist. “We are the country that will modernize to a large extent and operate CO₂ neutral, especially for you,” says the Chancellor.

Hinrichs makes another attempt. “Can you understand that young people are afraid?” The chancellor replies: “That’s why we’re doing exactly what I said. That’s why it’s good climate protection policy.” Then the video ends.

On Friday, “Last Generation” activists again blocked roads in many cities across Germany.
