Italian chocolatier Ferrero has halted production at its factory in Arlon, Belgium, due to salmonella. “All production has been halted,” a spokeswoman for the confectionery manufacturer told AFP news agency on Thursday. The bacteria was discovered there at the end of June. Parts of the Kinder chocolate products from the same factory were affected by salmonella contamination last year.

Ferrero’s spokeswoman stressed that the factory was “not closed” and that workers’ salaries were “one hundred percent covered”. The cleaning takes about two weeks. The company described the halt in production as a purely precautionary measure and stressed that no end product had tested positive for salmonella.

Already recalled once because of salmonella

In April 2022, Ferrero had to recall certain children’s products due to suspected salmonella, including surprise eggs, chocolate bonbons and mini eggs. Arlon in the Belgian Ardennes is an important location for the confectionery manufacturer, which is known worldwide for the Kinder and Nutella brands, among others.

Salmonella can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps and is one of the most common foodborne infections. Babies, small children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may be susceptible to a more serious course of disease. (t-online, afp)
