The French parliament has approved a significantly increased military budget that provides for spending of 413 billion euros from 2024 to 2030.
The budget that was approved by a very large majority in Paris on Thursday is significantly higher than the previous financial plan of the armed forces, in which 295 billion euros was budgeted for the period 2019 to 2025. The new plan provides for an increase in national defense spending from 2025 to the level of two percent of gross domestic product agreed within NATO.
At the presentation of the military budget earlier this year, President Emmanuel Macron stressed that the army must be able to respond more quickly to the Russian offensive war in Ukraine and gain strength quickly. To ensure the defense of Europe and its allies, more military equipment and a greater response capacity are needed. France is purchasing billions of extra ammunition, among other things.
