According to software giant Microsoft, hackers from China have penetrated the email accounts of Western government institutions. (archive image)

“We believe this adversary is focused on espionage – and gaining access to email systems to collect classified information,” the group said Tuesday evening (local time).

The target of the actor’s attacks, which Microsoft called Storm-0558, was apparently also the US State Department, even though Microsoft did not explicitly name the department. A State Department spokesperson said in Washington on Wednesday that the Department had identified “unusual activity” and then “took immediate steps to secure our systems.”

The State Department in Washington would not provide further information, citing its “cybersecurity policy”. “The incident is still under investigation,” the spokesman said.
