The self-declared nuclear power North Korea has fired another ballistic missile, according to the South Korean military. The missile was heading for the sea between the Korean peninsula and Japan, the general staff said in Seoul on Wednesday. Further details were not initially given.

UN decrees prohibit the highly isolated country from launching ballistic missiles. Depending on the design, these can be equipped with a nuclear warhead.

North Korea warned the United States Monday that it would send a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine to South Korea and indirectly threatened to shoot down US reconnaissance aircraft. The US plans to deliver a strategic nuclear submarine carrying nuclear warheads to the Korean peninsula, the defense ministry in Pyongyang said. This could “practically trigger the worst crisis in a nuclear conflict,” a ministry spokesman told state-controlled media. Given the heightened tensions with North Korea, the United States and its ally South Korea agreed in April to strengthen their military cooperation.
