A helicopter with six people on board has crashed in the Himalayas.
The bodies of the five Mexican tourists and their Nepalese pilot were found Tuesday in the wreckage after the crash near the world’s highest mountain Mount Everest, a police spokesman for the German news agency said.
The plane of the Nepalese Manang Air departed at 10:04 am local time from Surke Airport in the Solukhumbu district towards the capital Kathmandu and communication with the aircraft was lost at 10:13 am. The Himalayan region is popular with trekkers and mountaineers. It is now monsoon season and peak season for Mount Everest.
Plane crashes are common in Nepal. This is partly due to the fact that many of the highest mountains in the world are located there and the weather conditions can change quickly. From the point of view of the EU, safety oversight by the Nepalese aviation authorities is also insufficient. For safety reasons, Nepalese airlines are therefore not allowed to fly in EU airspace.
This year, a larger plane crashed on a domestic flight, killing 72 people. Last year, a plane crashed, killing 22 people. (aeg/sda/dpa)
