FILE - Police officers investigate after a car crashed into a primary school building in Wimbledon, London, Thursday 6th July 2023. British police say a second 8-year-old girl has died after being hit by a car...

An eight-year-old died last Thursday after a Land Rover broke through a school campus fence and crashed into a building. At the time, the children were reportedly celebrating the last day of school before summer vacation at the private school outdoors.

A 40-year-old woman was taken to hospital in critical condition on Sunday, police said. Other people, including a seven-month-old girl, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A total of 16 people had to be treated for injuries. The incident at the famous All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, which currently hosts the famous tennis tournament, sparked a major rescue operation.

The driver of the car, a 46-year-old woman, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving. It was initially unclear why her car left the road and entered the school grounds. However, the police do not assume a terrorist background. (sda/dpa)
