The Greek coastguard rescued about 120 migrants from a rocky stretch of coast in the south of the Peloponnese peninsula on Monday night. The swell had pushed their boat to the rocks of Cape Malea, where it ran aground.
As the state broadcaster, citing the Coast Guard, reported on Monday, all people were fine and temporarily housed in a school in the small port of Neapoli Voion. The boat had departed from the Turkish Aegean coast and was on its way to Italy. It was initially unclear from which countries the migrants came, the state broadcaster reports.
Gangs of people smugglers continue to try to bring migrants from Turkey and countries in North Africa and the Middle East to the EU countries of Greece, Cyprus and Italy. Engine damage or leaks are common on the aging boats and accidents happen again and again. On June 14, hundreds of people were killed when a fully-crowded fishing trawler sank about 50 nautical miles west of Greece. (sda/dpa)
