According to media reports, at least one person has been killed in heavy rain in the US state of New York. An approximately 30-year-old woman drowned in Orange County while trying to escape with her dog from a house surrounded by bodies of water, it said late Sunday evening (local time), citing a spokesperson for the district. The Hudson Valley was particularly affected.
Gov. Kathy Hochul said several people are still missing. She declared a state of emergency for the counties of Orange – about 80 kilometers north of New York City – and Ontario. Additional state resources can be made available in this way. Hochul warned of life-threatening flooding and called on people to avoid flooded streets. According to broadcaster CNN, the heavy rains also hit the US military academy at West Point. There, several people would have had to get out of their cars trapped by bodies of water to get to safety.
The weather service spoke of a massive thunderstorm front and issued a flash flood warning for parts of New York City. (sda/dpa)
