Two Germans had a lot of bad luck on the Austrian part of Lake Constance on Sunday. The two took off with their helicopter in Friedrichshafen, Germany, and crashed over the lake near Bregenz. Both were unharmed according to initial information, the state police in Vorarlberg (Austria) announced on Sunday.
As stated in the message, around 3 p.m., the police’s national reporting center in Bregenz was informed about a helicopter crash. The plane crashed into Lake Constance in front of the Bregenz Achmündung, as was initially said.
The authorities immediately sent a large contingent of rescuers to the scene. Including water police, fire brigade and water rescue. Witnesses at the scene reported to police that a jack-up helicopter hit Lake Constance, seemingly slowly descending, and then set.
Lake Constance: The crashed helicopter is 35 meters deep
Witnesses to the incident rushed to help the fallen. The two Germans were rescued and brought ashore by private boats. They were unharmed, writes the Vorarlberg police.
The plane took off from Friedrichshafen and is now at an estimated depth of about 35 meters at the bottom of Germany’s largest lake, which also borders Austria and Switzerland. It must now be repaired as soon as possible, as it was called.
Only half an hour after the first emergency call, the emergency services were able to end the rescue operation. It is not yet known why the helicopter crashed. Investigations into this are ongoing. Aviation experts, among others, should now “take over the necessary aviation inspections”, according to the police. However, the transport helicopter must first be salvaged for this.
