The Somali army says it has killed about 40 fighters and commanders of the Islamist terrorist militia Al-Shabaab. The authorities announced this on Sunday.
The US supported the Somalis in fighting near Afmadow in Lower Jubba in the south near the border with Kenya with three airstrikes, the US Army’s Africa Command Center (Africom) said. According to Africom, ten al-Shabaab terrorists were killed in the US attack, but there were no civilian casualties. The United States supports Somalia, including with drones in the fight against the Islamists.
The country in the Horn of Africa with about 16 million inhabitants has been shaken for years by attacks and other violence, especially by Al-Shabaab. For several months, the government in Mogadishu has been carrying out a military offensive against the terrorist group. The terrorist militia is stepping up counter-attacks against government bases and foreign troops in the country.
