A follower of US cult leader Charles Manson, convicted of murder, is about to be released after more than 50 years in prison, her lawyer said. Leslie Van Houten will be released on parole “in the coming weeks”, her lawyer Nancy Tetreault told AFP news agency on Friday (local time).
Van Houten is happy that her “hard work” on rehabilitation is being recognized. A spokesman for California Governor Gavin Newsom said he would not contest the 73-year-old’s release.
Excellent crimes
Convicted murderer Manson and his “Manson Family” committed a series of sensational murders in California in the late 1960s. The victims included director Roman Polanski’s wife, Sharon Tate.
Van Houten, now 73, was involved in the murder of a couple in Los Angeles and was sentenced to life imprisonment. A probation board ruled that Van Houten was eligible for parole in 2016, 2017 and 2019. However, this was blocked by the court at the time. (SDA)
