Police officers in Germany broke the news of death to the wrong family after a fatal car accident.

After a car accident in Brandenburg, the police accidentally delivered an obituary to the wrong family. As the detectives in Neuruppin announced on Tuesday, the “tragic confusion” was caused by a wallet forgotten in the accident car, along with documents and a matching permit. The error was spotted when the presumed dead 44-year-old contacted his family.

According to police, the killed occupant of the vehicle was actually a 38-year-old man who was known to the 44-year-old. As further investigation revealed, the two men from Lower Saxony drove together in the region around Schönberg on Sunday and spent the night there. The 44-year-old apparently sold the car to the 38-year-old, but likely forgot his wallet in the vehicle.

“Unexpected twist”

When the 44-year-old woke up Monday morning, the 38-year-old had surprisingly disappeared by car. As a result, the 38-year-old suffered a fatal accident on a country road when he went off the road for unknown reasons and crashed into a tree. However, based on the documents in the wallet and the corresponding registration number of the car, the police assumed that it was the 44-year-old.

The officials brought the news of his death to his family before the unsuspecting man contacted his relatives moments later. The officials spoke of an “unexpected turn”. The identity of the dead accident driver was then “clearly clarified on the basis of personal characteristics”, it was undoubtedly the 38-year-old acquaintance. (ter/AFP)
