“I want to reiterate how much (the EU) values the partnership with Niger,” Borrell said after a meeting with President Mohamed Bazoum on Wednesday.

Niger and its neighbors in West Africa have been tyrannized for years by armed militias, some of them Islamist. Again and again there are attacks with dead and injured. With the end of the UN peacekeeping mission Minusma in Mali at the end of 2023, Niger is increasingly becoming the focus of Western efforts to counter the violent advance of the jihadists and also the growing military influence of actors from Russia.

At the end of last year, the EU announced its intention to support the Nigerien armed forces with a military mission in the fight against terrorism. The Bundeswehr also agreed to take part in the operation. The EU has been involved in the civilian reconstruction mission EUCAP Sahel Niger in the West African country for over a decade. The EU supports the training of Nigerien police officers. After military coups in Mali and Burkina Faso, Niger is the last of the three neighboring countries to be led by a democratically elected government.
