Just a tiny green dot on a fingertip: this is the world’s smallest handbag.

It’s so small you need a magnifying glass to see it: probably the smallest handbag in the world. The bag shimmers yellow-green like a tiny speck on the fingertip of a New York exhibitor.

As small as the bag is, the price is not. $63,000 (56,000 francs) was turned over for the tiny creation in an online auction on Wednesday, as reported by CNN. The bag was created by the New York artist collective MSCHF, founded in 2016.

The design of the bag is inspired by the luxury label Louis Vuitton. The art object was therefore decorated with the well-known monogram “LV”.

“Narrow enough to fit through the eye of a needle”

The dimensions of the “Microscopic Handbag” creation are particularly astonishing: the small object is only 0.76 millimeters wide. The manufacturers advertise the product on Instagram with the slogan: “Narrow enough to fit through the eye of a needle.” Also included: a microscope with a digital display. The object is made with a manufacturing technology that specializes in 3D printing plastic parts in the micro range.

The sale was conducted by the auction house Joopiter, which was founded by the American musician Pharell Williams (50). While Williams is currently creative director for Louis Vuitton, MSCHF boss Kevin Wiesner assured the New York Times that the glam brand has nothing to do with the latest creation.

critique of consumer capitalism

MSCHF has caused quite a stir in the past. Because: The collective regularly makes fun of so-called consumer capitalism with their creations. So it fell out with the sports brand “Nike” because it released so-called “Satan’s sneakers” with drops of human blood. MSCHF is mainly criticized because the collective also benefits from the system they denounce.

MSCHF writes about the current creation on Instagram: “When a once functional object like a handbag gets smaller and smaller, the object state becomes more and more abstract until it is just a brand symbol.” The “Microscopic Handbag” leads this system to its logical conclusion. A utensil is reduced to a jewel and the actual function evaporates. (A)
