The Netherlands plans to ban mobile phones in the classroom unless smartphones are needed in the classroom. Education Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf presented a corresponding regulation to the House of Representatives on Tuesday in The Hague. The mobile phone ban will take effect from next year and schools will draw up individual rules for this in October. Especially if students are on social media during class or use other apps, this distracts them from the subject matter. That disrupts social interaction in the classroom, was given as the reason.
The ministry had previously consulted scientists and representatives of parents and teachers. All those involved stressed that concentration and participation during the lesson were important. Pupils are entitled to an optimal learning environment without unnecessary distractions, according to the ministry. (saw/sda/dpa)
