The accident happened around noon on the Aiguille d’Argentière, a 3,901-meter-high mountain peak on the border with the canton of Valais, the Italian news agency Ansa reported on Monday. Three rope teams with a total of six men – four women and two men – had left in the morning.

When they were at an altitude of over 10,000 feet, the two women at the back of the group slid about 60 feet into a snow gully. The 62-year-old Swiss immediately broke free to help them, but fell in the process.

The two women, a 31-year-old German and a 46-year-old Swiss woman, suffered minor injuries. The other three climbers, a Peruvian, a South African and a Swiss, were unharmed. (SDA)
