Detainees apparently set fire: fire in Thun prison cell – two injured (17)

On Sunday night, a fire broke out in a cell of the regional prison of Thun. Both occupants were injured, one seriously. With regard to the outbreak of fire, a conscious action is in the foreground. Further investigations are underway.

At 00:05 the fire was reported to the cantonal police in Bern. When the emergency services arrived on the scene, the fire had already been extinguished by employees of the regional prison. However, a strong development of smoke could still be observed in the cell in question.

The two prisoners (both 17) were rescued from the cell. Both suffered injuries, one of them was seriously injured. After first aid on the spot, they were each transported to hospital by ambulance. A prison officer also went to the hospital to check for possible smoke inhalation.

Fire affected only one cell

No other prison building was affected by the fire. In addition to various services of the Bern cantonal police, the Thun fire brigade was deployed with about 28 members. The affected section of Allmendstrasse was closed during the operation.

The cantonal police in Bern, led by the cantonal youth prosecutor, has launched an investigation into the fire. According to current knowledge, an intentional arson by one of the two occupants is in the foreground. (jwg)
