The Maddie McCann case is one of the most famous criminal cases in the world. In 2007, the then three-year-old disappeared without a trace from a room in a Portuguese holiday apartment in the Algarve. A body has never been found. What happened to the child is unknown to this day.
But Helge B.* (52) gave the researchers an important clue in 2008. He is a star witness in the McCann case and gave the London police Scotland Yard a prime suspect: Christian B.* (46). On Thursday, the witness spoke publicly about the case for the first time in an interview with “Bild”.
Rape videos and facts
The witness says that he and his friend Manfred S.* broke into Christian B.’s apartment in 2008 when he was arrested for theft. There they would have found videos of Christian B. raping an American (72). “I knew then what kind of man B. is,” says Helge B. to the newspaper.
Christian B. had to go behind bars for raping the woman. The 7-year prison sentence is based on statements made by the two friends. And on a hair of Christian B. that investigators found on the victim’s sheet. Helge B., on the other hand, left the videos in his caravan, reports “Bild”. He doesn’t know where they are today.
The witness also says that the alleged perpetrator confessed to him in 2008 at the Spanish Dragon Festival. When Helge B. told him that he didn’t understand how Maddie could disappear without a trace, Christian B. replied: “She wasn’t screaming.” For Helge B. it was clear: he kidnapped her. The detectives also share this opinion – because Christian B. is seen as the main suspect. However, to date there is no clear evidence of his guilt.
Defense shoots at witnesses
The new findings caused a stir. But now Christian B.’s defender is expressing himself – with harsh criticism. lawyer Dr Friedrich Fülscher (39) tells “Bild”: “The testimony of the witness raises many questions that encourage me to believe that these videos are fictional.”
Helge B.’s statements are not conclusive. In addition, there are “considerable contradictions with the statements of witness Manfed S.”. Because according to the court that convicted Christian B. for rape, he should have seen different sequences than Helge B. It is clear to the lawyer: “Based on Helge B.’s current description, this would not be possible.” (Mrs)
