Supreme electoral court takes action: Bolsonaro may not stand for election until 2030 “Titan” debris recovered: do they provide information about the cause of the accident?

Brazil’s ex-president Jair Bolsonaro cannot be elected to public office until 2030. Four judges of the Supreme Electoral Court in the capital Brasília voted Friday in a case against the right-wing ex-president (2019-2022) for the left-wing PDT party’s request to be denied the right to stand as a voter. candidate, who forms the necessary majority, was shown on Brazilian television on Friday. A judge voted against. If the verdict stands, Bolsonaro will also be barred from the 2026 presidential election. His defense has already indicated that it wants to appeal.

The attorney general in charge of electoral law accused Bolsonaro of casting doubt on Brazil’s electoral system during a televised meeting with foreign diplomats last July. Bolsonaro claimed it was not safe and could be tampered with.

Bolsonaro’s lawyer rejected the attorney general’s allegations. According to a report by TV Globo, Tarcisio Vieira de Carvalho said that the debate on the electoral system should not be taboo in a democracy. Bolsonaro just wanted to help improve the electoral system.

Brazil’s electoral system is fully electronic and passed a regular security test by the Supreme Electoral Court in May last year.

Bolsonaro, however, repeatedly questioned the reliability of the system and never explicitly acknowledged his electoral defeat by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva last October. Earlier this year, a few days after his successor took office, radical supporters of Bolsonaro stormed Congress, the seat of government and the Supreme Court in Brasília, wreaking havoc. It took security forces hours to regain control of the situation. (sda/dpa)
