About 100 miles southwest of Punta Maldonado in the southern state of Guerrero, the storm reached sustained winds of up to 40 mph on Thursday afternoon. A tropical cyclone is considered a hurricane when wind speeds exceed 119 kilometers per hour. The hurricane warning applies to a stretch of coast between Zihuatanejo in Guerrero and Playa Pérula in the western state of Jalisco, the NHC said. The region is also home to tourist destinations such as Ixtapa, Careyes, and Manzanillo.

“Beatriz” initially moved northwest parallel to the coast. However, reaching the mainland directly cannot be ruled out, said National Weather Service coordinator Alejandra Méndez.

The tropical cyclone season begins May 15 in the Pacific Ocean and June 1 in the Atlantic Ocean. It ends in both regions on November 30. As the first hurricane of the year, “Adrian” formed over the Pacific Ocean on Wednesday without endangering coastal areas. (sda/dpa)
