Accurate seconds for the crew and passengers on a Delta Air Lines Boeing 717-200. This was on a Wednesday morning in the US from Atlanta to Charlotte, 96 passengers and five crew members were on board.

When the pilots tried to extend the landing gear, the flaps opened, but the wheels remained in the retracted position. The plane flew over the airfield once so that the tower could provide visual confirmation of the problem.

The pilots had no choice but to land without the front landing gear – and they did so with flying colours. “I didn’t notice any vibrations or even loud noises,” says a passenger on a local TV station. The occupants were then evacuated via emergency slides, there were no injuries. (new)
