The revolt of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin (62) could have been coordinated with the help of General Sergei Surovikin (56) – US intelligence circles report to the “New York Times”. Although Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov immediately dismissed this as “gossip”, he did not deny it.
There has been no trace of General Surovikin since Saturday, Russian media report. His family has lost contact with him. Apparently there is a simple reason for this: according to two sources close to the Ministry of Defense in Moscow, Surovikin is in detention. This is reported by the Moscow Times.
He would be in Lefortovo Prison
The arrest is “related to Prigozhin,” a source says. “It is clear that he (Zurovikin) sided with Prigozhin during the uprising and they got their hands on him.”
Which prison he is in is top secret. This is not even communicated through internal channels. Russian military blogger Vladimir Romanov writes that Surovikin was arrested on Sunday and is currently being held in Moscow’s Lefortovo detention center.
However, there are also doubts about the theory that Surovikin was involved in all of Prigozhin’s plans. US military expert Rob Lee wrote on Twitter that Surovikin is the commander of the Russian Air Force. This raises the question of why Prigozhin had several military aircraft shot down while allegedly receiving active support from their commander.
Surovkin demoted by Putin
General Surovikin – who enjoys strong troop support – was the Supreme Commander of the Russian Armed Forces in Ukraine for three months between October 2022 and January 2023.
Eventually, he was demoted to deputy by Putin and replaced by Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov. He would be an ally of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin. He praised him repeatedly on the highest notes. (new)
